K.I.S.S. and STAY healthyI was having a conversation with my son about his diet and it prompted me to write this. You see my son is a healthy 17 year old boy who trains for his football team 4 nights a week and plays a football match at the weekend. He also works all day and goes out with his friends, in other words a normal boy of his age. He will not however eat what I call a balanced diet. As a child he ate all manner of fruit and vegetables and growing up all 3 of our children had few sweets and did not eat processed foods as a rule. As our children get older it becomes more difficult for us as parents to influence what they eat, and I can say that whether they have always eaten a "healthy" diet or not does not always make any difference. As I was having, what is becoming a routine conversation with my son about his diet it occurred to me that part of the problem is that he feels well. You see our bodies are amazing , we can do many potentially damaging things for fairly long periods of time and our body will strive to maintain that balance that allows us to live what appears to be a healthy life. Just because we have no "real" symptoms of illness we assume that all is well. In simple terms, our body will take what it needs to maintain life. If you can imagine that in our body all our organs, cells, bones and muscles need energy and nutrition, if we are not putting the correct form or amount in then the body has to prioritize which areas get what first and that is exactly what happens. What this means is that the body will "rob" certain areas to provide nutritional support for other more vital areas, this happens continually in all humans. When we are young we have more supplies and as we get older, if we do not replenish these supplies, then they will diminish, we then start to get signs and symptoms of illness / dis-ease and we wonder what on earth can be causing it! As I explained to my son, the fact that he is not giving his body the nutritional support that it needs right now, is not a big issue for him, right now, he is young and has other areas that the body can get what it needs to maintain life from, however, in future, if he continues as he is now, he will find that he will perhaps have less energy, allergies, skin problems, and a whole host of other "signs" to tell him there is a problem to be addressed. If he ignores these signs that can then lead to more serious illness. It is too easy for us to wait until we get signs and symptoms to look at our lifestyle. It is also not difficult or as boring as people think to get into balance. It is also never too late to do something about it.
